The reality: you need to get yourself to Krabi Town terminal first (฿60 per person by songthaew from Ao Nang, or ฿200–350 by taxi) and then from Phuket’s terminal to your hotel (Grab from Terminal 2 runs ฿150–350). The total savings over a shared minivan are roughly ฿100–150 per person — real money, but the added transfers and waiting stretch the journey considerably. Best suited for budget travellers already in Krabi Town who aren’t in a rush. For anyone based in Ao Nang, the shared minivan’s door-to-door convenience is worth the difference.
Option 5: Private taxi or transfer
A private car from Ao Nang to anywhere in Phuket takes 2.5–3 hours and costs ฿2,000–3,000 for the car regardless of passenger count. For a family of four splitting that, it works out to ฿500–750 per head — comparable to the ferry, without the pier logistics and with door-to-door delivery.
This makes sense when you have a lot of luggage, are travelling with young children, need to reach a specific hotel in a quieter part of Phuket, or are making a timed connection out of Phuket Airport. The road route to the airport passes through northern Phuket, so from Ao Nang you’re looking at 2.5–3 hours door to terminal — allow 3.5 hours if you need check-in time and are leaving at peak morning traffic. Note that Phuket’s beach areas (Patong, Kata, Karon) are in the west of the island and can add 30–45 minutes on top of the Phuket Town arrival time, depending on traffic.
