Ao Nang Beach in Krabi with limestone cliffs along the shore and people walking on the sand

Ao Nang

The hub I would pick for a first trip: boats, food and a walkable strip, with the better beaches a short longtail away.

If it is your first week in Krabi, I would sleep in Ao Nang. The longtail pier, the tour desks, the restaurants, the bars and the songthaews sit in one walkable town. Almost every boat day starts here. The beach in front of the bars is not the reason. The boats are.

What it’s like

Ao Nang is a busy beach town built for visitors. The main drag runs parallel to the seafront: restaurants, dive shops, massage places, convenience stores, tour operators, and it stays lively into the evening. It is not a quiet town, and it is not the prettiest street in the province. The convenience is the point, and the sunset off the promenade is the daily reward.

The beach is a working seafront lined with longtails. Fine for a stroll and a drink. Ordinary for swimming, and the water is often murky. The sand people actually swim from is a short boat away. That is why you base here: Ao Nang is the launch pad, not the postcard.

If you like a morning run or a flat walk before the heat, the promenade is the easy loop. Save the cliff scramble for Railay.

Who it suits

First-timers, anyone stacking island days, and anyone who wants dinner choice and a drink after. Families do well here because the logistics are simple. Couples who want quiet are better north at Klong Muang or Tubkaek. If you are counting every baht, Krabi Town is cheaper, and you will commute to the coast.

Getting around from Ao Nang

This is the town’s useful trick. From here you can:

  • Catch a longtail to Railay off the beach for ฿100 each way. See the Railay Beach guide.
  • Take a songthaew to Krabi Town for about ฿60, or short hops along the beach road for ฿20.
  • Get hotel pickup for island tours. The Four Islands, Hong Islands and Phi Phi trips collect from Ao Nang.
  • Reach the airport by shared shuttle (฿150) or taxi (฿600).

Full fares and routes are in getting around Krabi.

Eating and evenings

The strip has the widest food range in Krabi: Thai, seafood, Italian, Indian, breakfast cafés, plus sunset tables along the front. It costs more than the markets, and it is written for visitors. For the cheapest local plates, take the songthaew into Krabi Town on a weekend market night. Nightlife here is easygoing beach bars and a few livelier spots. It is not a festival town. If you want a loud night, this is a drink and a sunset, not a parade.

Where to stay

Rooms run from hostels a couple of streets back to smarter hotels near the sand. A block or two inland costs less than the seafront, for a short walk. On Soi 8, The Capuchin Hotel is a 15-room 3-star a short walk from Noppharat Thara, not a beachfront room. The Nine Hotel @ Ao Nang, at 348 Moo 2, is another 3-star with 9 rooms. Agoda puts the beach at 660 metres. Further along Nopparat Thara Soi 8/1, Viangviman Luxury Private Pool Villa and Resort is 7 rooms. Agoda lists Noppharathara Beach at 1.02 kilometres. The boat days from this coast sit inside more than one national park, and the fees are not one number: Krabi national parks. If an elephant morning is on the list, the sanctuary comparison is the page that sorts the policies. In high season the good-value places book out first, so reserve ahead. Compare options on the hotels list and read where to stay in Krabi before you pick Ao Nang over the alternatives. For which beaches are worth the swim, see Krabi beaches for swimming.

Choosing your spot within Ao Nang

Ao Nang is bigger than the first walk suggests. The seafront and main strip are steps from the beach, the sunset bars and the tour desks. Most convenient, priciest, noisiest. A street or two back drops the price for a couple of minutes’ walk. That is the value spot I would book on a normal budget. Nopparat Thara, just west, is quieter, with the same island views and a calmer beach. The hillside behind town has views and mid-range resorts, and you need a ride down to the front.

Good to know

ATMs, pharmacies, clinics, convenience stores and dive shops cover the strip, so this is the easy place to replace whatever you forgot. The touts along the front are persistent and low-pressure. A polite no is enough. Prices here are the highest in the province, so cheap food and lower room rates are a songthaew into Krabi Town. Ao Nang faces west. The sunset is the best free show in town. Claim a spot on the promenade before the light goes.

The bottom line

Ao Nang trades a quiet town beach for convenience, and for most first trips that is the right trade. Sleep here, boat out by day, eat and watch the sunset at night. The 3-day itinerary shows how the days string together from this base.
